Women and Youth Engagement

In the vibrant seascapes of Dar es Salaam and Mtwara, a transformative initiative is underway. The USAID Heshimu Bahari Project, in collaboration with ASUTA, is championing the involvement of women and youth in fisheries resource management.

Incorporating women and youths not only promotes balanced practices that consider various perspectives and needs but also fosters innovative solutions that are essential for achieving long-term conservation goals.

Despite their active roles in the fisheries value chain, these groups often find themselves excluded from crucial decision-making processes. This oversight not only limits their potential contributions to marine conservation but also stifles their development in leadership roles. On June 15th, a half-day campaign at Kigamboni Municipal brought together local government officials, community leaders, and residents, highlighting the critical need for inclusive participation in managing marine resources. The event attracted 78 guests and was honored by the presence of the District Fisheries Officer of Kigamboni District as the Guest of Honor. The primary aim of the campaign was to boost the involvement of women and youth in managing marine resources within the Dar es Salaam Seascape. With a welcoming address from the Msanga Mkuu Ward Chairman, who emphasized the campaign's significance for the local community, the stage was set for an impactful discussion. The Chairperson of the Local Government Authority commended the Heshimu Bahari Project for prioritizing inclusivity, noting the unique perspectives women bring to conservation efforts.
