Equipping participants with essential leadership skills to drive sustainable community development

The leadership training in Dar es Salaam kicked off with an engaging introduction led by Madam Grace Munis, who equipped participants with essential leadership skills for community development and effective decision-making. The USAID Heshimu Bahari socioeconomic and gender assessment report highlighted significant gaps in leadership skills that hinder effective resource management and limit the involvement of women and youth. Participants included resource managers and community leaders, who underwent a thorough assessment to identify current capabilities and specific areas lacking in skills, such as strategic visioning, conflict resolution, and inclusive decision-making. Madam Gift Mchomvu, the Seascape coordinator, emphasized these critical areas during the training. On June 26th, 2024, the USAID Heshimu Bahari leadership training continued in Mtwara, led by Dr. Thomas Kipingili. This session aimed to cultivate visionary leadership in coastal communities and address the gaps identified in previous assessments. The training sought not only to enhance the existing leadership capabilities of resource managers but also to empower the next generation of leaders, particularly women and youth.

A significant highlight of the training programs was the commitment to gender inclusivity. In both sessions, women constituted a remarkable 71% of the participants, fostering an empowering environment that encouraged female leaders to actively engage in decision-making processes. The training demonstrated significant improvements in participants’ understanding of their leadership responsibilities. The percentage of participants who disagreed with the statement “leaders inspire change” decreased from over 58% to 37% post-training. Similarly, the belief that leaders should engage in collaborative problem-solving strengthened, with disagreement dropping from 47% to 34%. Although there were positive shifts in understanding the concept of adaptive leadership, some challenges remained, particularly regarding the statement “leaders serve the needs of the community,” which saw disagreement increase from 16% to 31%.
