As the impacts of climate change intensify globally, coastal communities in Tanzania are facing unique challenges. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and coastal erosion threaten not only marine ecosystems but also the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

To address these pressing issues, the USAID Heshimu Bahari project, implemented by Asasi ya Uwezeshaji Tanzania (ASUTA), has conducted vital climate change training sessions in both Dar es Salaam and Mtwara. In July 2024, ASUTA held a climate change training at Afya House in Kigamboni District, bringing together various stakeholders, including fisheries officers, Marine Protected Area managers, and community members from the fishing sectors of Kigamboni and Kinondoni. The training aimed to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and to explore adaptation strategies. Participants engaged in interactive discussions and activities that highlighted the relationship between climate change and marine biodiversity. Using visual aids, including pictures and cartoons, trainers effectively communicated complex concepts in a gender-inclusive environment that involved special groups such as people with disabilities. The training was conducted in Swahili, enhancing accessibility for all attendees. Key adaptation strategies discussed included restoring mangroves, which serve as natural barriers against storms, and adopting sustainable fishing practices. The training underscored the importance of diversified livelihoods—such as eco-tourism and sustainable aquaculture—in reducing pressure on marine ecosystems.

In August 2024, a similar training took place in Mtwara at the TCCIA Hall, addressing the unique vulnerabilities of coastal communities in that region. Participants engaged in discussions about the urgent threats posed by climate change, such as coastal erosion and habitat loss. The Mtwara training focused on practical adaptation strategies, including managing coastal erosion and restoring degraded habitats. Community members were encouraged to explore diversified livelihoods, which are essential for building resilience against climate change while promoting sustainability.

The success of USAID Heshimu Bahari Project on climate change training in raising awareness among coastal communities
The impact of the training was evident in participants' understanding of climate change. Initially, 68% viewed its impacts as short-term; however, this perspective shifted following the training, with 53% acknowledging the long-term nature of these challenges. Additionally, all participants recognized the importance of diversified livelihoods, emphasizing the critical need for adaptation strategies rather than solely focusing on prevention. The USAID Heshimu Bahari project’s climate change trainings in both Dar es Salaam and Mtwara have successfully raised awareness and equipped coastal communities with essential knowledge and tools to adapt to climate challenges.
